The Power of CAMP!

I was blessed to grow up in a Christian household where I watched my mother pray quietly by herself every morning, and we went to church every Sunday. I was surrounded by discussions of God and Christianity and had prayed the prayer to invite Jesus into my heart many times. I thought it was something you had to continue doing after each mistake you made.

I started going to the summer cabin camps each year, just like my three older siblings had done. Typical summer camp activities (hiking, swimming, games, horseback riding) are intermixed with worship time and cabin group Bible study. I had SO MUCH FUN at camp, while also learning that being a Christian is more about relationship with God than religious habits. I didn’t have to keep inviting Jesus into my life, because he never left! I remember one particular night at evening worship, the Holy Spirit was truly moving among us. We continued singing, worshiping, and praying far beyond the scheduled time. I had never experienced anything so powerful before.

I went to camp several summers in a row and always had a positive experience. I am 27 now and attribute my faith and relationship with God mostly to my mother and to the summers I spent at Camp Hebron. Camp creates a quiet, serene environment to connect with God, nature, and each other. I think it is even more important for this generation of children to take time away from technology and instead plug into God and his amazing creation. - Mary Scheib
