A Life Built at Camp- 35 Years and Counting

By, Kim Sheeler

Sometime in the early 1980’s I was introduced to Christian Camping. I fell in love with the whole idea of what it was and prayed I would get to serve on a summer staff at some point in life. The summer of 1984 my dream came to fulfillment and with it a desire was born to do this full time in ministry someplace. I would spend the next 6 summers and year in a discipleship program at Miracle Mountain Ranch serving and learning the ins and outs of camp life. And I couldn’t have been happier. I just didn’t know where I was going to go next but I somehow knew my life would center around Christian camping.

Late fall 1989 I would accept the position of Horsemanship Director at Camp Hebron. I began my position the first of the year, 1990. I couldn’t believe my dream was coming true. I would soon after meet Dan, or rather re-meet Dan. We had met a year prior at a Christian camping conference and briefly had a conversation. He would tell me later he was strangely drawn to me even though my outgoing personality really wasn’t what he would usually be drawn to. And well the rest is history.

The Sheeler Family

Dan and I married on December 22nd, 1990, in the Sylvan View Dining room with the beautiful backdrop of the glass doors and the falling snow. We would begin our lives together in the Rolands’ cottage and then to an apartment below the house we currently live in. Benjamin would arrive in 1992, Andrew in 1994 and in 2000 God would bless us with a beautiful surprise, Matthew.

While I have served in several roles at Camp including Host, Head Cook, Registrar and more, my greatest role has been that of supporting Dan in his role as Facilities Director. I have stood back and watched him serve tirelessly and truly do it with little complaint and with such great integrity. He is pretty great.

It hasn’t always been an easy road. Ministry is hard. We have watched thousands of people come and go. We have said hard goodbyes, made many friends and served with some amazing people. We have raised 3 sons here and welcomed a daughter in law and grandchildren. Which happened because of Camp Hebron (Ben and Lauren met at Camp). Even in its hardest seasons, I believe in the ministry of Camp and count it a privilege to serve with our lives here and to see God and His gospel message shared with those who have driven past that Shalom sign. And while I have no idea how we are at the 35-year mark for Dan, we have started to dream of retirement sometime in the near future. And while that is exciting, Camp Hebron will always be a huge part of my heart.
