How God Led Joe to Camp

My camp story starts when I first did an adventure camp in 2015. That was the only time I had a connection with camp until earlier this year. The Christian fellowship group at Juniata College, where I recently graduated, was planning to attend Jubilee conference. Unfortunately, the conference was made virtual but our group still wanted a place to go for the weekend. We ended up coming here to camp, a place I knew of distantly. Two staff members gave a marketing pitch about working at camp for the summer. I missed this pitch because I was at a senior dinner event that night. Looking back I chuckle at how God mysteriously works because I was the only one from that group who worked here this summer and yet, I was the only one to not hear the pitch.

I love Jesus

and the outdoors

After graduation, I knew I was planning to take a gap year before starting medical school in the fall of 2023. I had plans for a gap year working with Habitat for Humanity but needed something to do for the summer. After rediscovering camp and knowing that I love Jesus and the outdoors, I realized this would be an amazing opportunity for me. I submitted my application and interviewed shortly after. A few weeks into summer, Caleb Schleup, the Adventure Specialist at camp started talking to me about an adventure discipleship program that he was starting up. Immediately I was intrigued but wasn’t sure because I already had plans for the year. After talking with Caleb more about it and through prayer, God revealed to me that he wanted me in the program. There was a specific night of worship where we were taking time to simply be with God and during that time, I heard Him calling me to stay. In the short time that I have been here, camp has become a very special place in my heart. This summer was probably the best ever through playing games with campers, sharing my love for Jesus and the outdoors with others, and developing a wonderful community. I am truly grateful to God for how He has led me here and for all that He has and is doing in my life.
