A Sanctuary on the Other Side of the Mountain

In 1983 our family moved from the Philadelphia area to Mechanicsburg. At the end of that school year our older daughter attended the school’s, “Outdoor Education Program” at Camp Hebron. Since she enjoyed the experience so much and had learned about all the kinds of summer programs offered at camp for kids, she wanted to return to Camp Hebron.

Although at that time we knew very little about the camp, we let her attend with a friend. During that week she learned that Family Camps were also available. So the following summer my husband, our two daughters and I became Family Campers. We continued doing that for almost 30 years. As a fifth grader, our younger daughter also attended the school’s “Outdoor Education Program” and that year her dad also went as a counselor for a group of fifth graders. Both girls attended summer camp kids’ programs. Later when our younger daughter married and had a daughter, the two of them enjoyed the Moms and Tots Program. Over the years I have shared the weekend of Women’s Retreat with friends.

We have been a part of many functions at camp, such as the Thanksgiving Dinner and Homecoming. We were lease holders for a number of years. We have volunteered in many areas, such as the kitchen, dining room, folding linens, stuffing envelopes, helping repair vehicles, serving on committees, being Association members, and a Board member.

Camp Hebron has become our sanctuary on the other side of the mountain. We feel blessed to be able to support camp in every way possible. It' s my sanctuary where I can be alone walking the Prayer Labyrinth to meditate and talk with God. Or I can find friendship and understanding with other women at the Women's Retreat. Family Camp provides time for the whole family and yet separation to study the Word in specific age groups. Camp is my sanctuary because it fills me with God's words in a beautiful, peaceful. non judgemental setting.
